This is something we should ALL be aware of!!
The FDA just announced that Tramadol (also known as Ralivia) now has another “risk” or side-effect on its label, and that is SUICIDE. This label instructs physicians NOT to prescribe this drug to people who suffer from depression, are prone to addictive behaviours, and those who might be on other drugs that depress the central nervous system because of the nature of this drug.
Because of previous suicides that have been associated IN PART with the use of this synthetic opioid, EVERYONE who suffers from chronic pain and those already on this medication should be aware of this new risk.
I will admit that Ralivia is a part of my treatment plan. and it has been for over a year now. I have never had any of the major side-effects listed on the label of this medication, and I find it effective in helping me manage my pain. For me the benefit has been that it is a more tolerable drug than some of the stronger opioid medications, and isn’t as hard on my body as some medications I have been on. I have not experienced any depression as a result of this medication either – but as we all know, EVERY medication responds differently in DIFFERENT PEOPLE! SO PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!
If you are someone who is currently on this drug (like me), and this “on-label” risk is something new to you, please speak to your Doctor at your next appointment so that you can have it further explained to you. And let this be a reminder that you need to know EXACTLY what you are putting in your body. If you have a Doctor that refuses to take the time to walk you through the process of each medication he/she prescribes either find a NEW doctor who will, or employ the knowledge of your pharmacist! THAT is what they are there for!! This might be a great time to have a sit down conversation with your pharmacist, and ask for detailed information on your drug portfolio!
If you are someone who is NOT currently on this drug, file this information somewhere in your mind, so that if you are ever given an opportunity to use Tramadol as part of your treatment plan, you will know the right questions to ask…. If you need help brainstorming questions for your doctor click on this link – there are 15 questions that you might want to jot down for your next appointment.
Please be careful!! I know all to well what it is like to be so desperate for pain relief that you will take ANYTHING and EVERYTHING your Doctor prescribes…. I know that feeling well.. but we HAVE to advocate aggressively for our own health care needs. If you are absolutely CANDID about your emotional health, previous side-effects from different medications, how and when you dose yourself on ALL medications (Prescription, over-the-counter, herbal remedies etc) – then you should be okay. UTILIZE EVERY PERSON ON YOUR MEDICAL TEAM – Physician, Herbalist, Pharmacist, Massage Therapist, Chiropractor…. but the most important person on your medical team is YOU.
I wish you a peaceful, happy, and pain-free day everyone!!
